Workshop Description

Create Your Own Art Cloth!

Create your own hand-printed cloth for art quilts in this free-spirited workshop. Printing and screening with wet and dry thickened dyes, paper, glue, soy wax, and other resists, you'll create fabric that reflects your personality and color sense. Whether you have surface design experience or are just getting started, you're sure to discover an exciting new approach to printing your own cloth!

This process-oriented workshop takes a playful, “what if?” approach. We encourage you to use your intuition, to experiment, and to enjoy the results of your play.

Rayna Gillman uses paints, dyes, image transfer, and discharge agents to evoke both memory and an urban sensibility, as she explores memory and a sense of loss. Working in mixed media on textiles and paper, she integrates text and images through a variety of surface design, collage, and printmaking techniques. She is captivated by found and recycled objects, including corrugated cardboard, old photos and ephemera, and is particularly intrigued by the texture and design potential of construction fence. "I'm haunted by how easily we throw away, tear down and rebuild - obliterating the past, too often with no improvement. By re-using the fragments, I am giving them new life." Noted for her instinctive sense of color and her improvisational approach to design, she is an experienced teacher who encourages students to work spontaneously, to ask "what if?" and to experiment. She teaches both nationally and in the U.K. She is currently writing a book on her processes. Ms. Gillman's work has been featured in Quilting Arts Magazine, published in several books, including Margaret Miller's Smashing Sets, Lesley Riley's Quilted Memories, and Nancy Eha's Bead Creative Art Quilts. She has been a guest artist on the popular HGTV program, "Simply Quilts," and is one of 16 national artists whose work was selected in both 2000 and 2002 for the exhibit Quilt 21: American Art Quilts for the 21st Century. Her work has appeared in museums and galleries around the country and is in private collections in the U.S., France, and Belgium. Her work is available on the web at www.studio78.net. She can be reached at rgillman@studio78.net.
