THE DIGITAL QUILT: Photography, Printing and Stitching

Instructors: Lura Schwarz Smith and Kerby Smith

Supply List for "Digital Boot Camp for Quilters" First Two Days
  • A minimum of 10 - 12 personal photographs saved as digital files (JPEG or TIFF) on your laptop or external hard drive.   These images may be scans of personal art work.   Your digital images should have a common theme that can be worked with to create the fabric for an art quilt top.
  • Digital Camera - either a "point and shoot" or a "SLR" type digital camera.   We get a lot of questions on digital cameras.   Please see our website www.thedigitalquilt.com for more information about digital cameras.
  • THE MANUAL FOR YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA - There are so many different digital cameras you need to have your camera manual so we can assist you with questions about your camera.   If you do not have it, download it from the manufacturer's website before the class.
  • 2 Blank storage media cards at least 512 MB but 2 GB each is better.
  • Card Reader or other ability to transfer digital images from your camera to your computer.
  • Laptop PC computer with either XP or Window Vista operating system, USB 2.0 ports and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 loaded on it.   (You may bring Elements 5.0 but class demonstrations will be with a PC-Vista and Elements 6.0)
  • Flash drive - for transferring your digital file from your laptop so that we may print your image on fabric.   A clean (no files) flash drive or "thumb drive" of 512 MB.   Better yet is a 1 GB or 2 GB flash drive.
  • OPTIONAL:   External hard drive for backing up your work such as a Western Digital Passport.
  • OPTIONAL:   Wireless Mouse.   If you are used to working with a mouse, the touchpad on the laptop that substitutes for the mouse is a different feel for navigating around your computer.   We recommend that you bring a wireless mouse that plugs into one of the USB 2 ports on your laptop if you are not used to working with the touchpad.
  • OPTIONAL:   If your digital SLR can shoot a RAW file and you are using the camera manufacturer's proprietary software to process the RAW file instead of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) then you need to have the software loaded on your laptop.   (i.e. Nikon Capture for Nikon cameras)
Supply List for Inking and Quilting Digital Fabric

We will be exploring various compositional techniques for the images you print on fabric in this class.   You may choose one or more of the following options: machine piecing, using a free-form, curved paperless, pin-less technique that Lura teaches, or hand or fusible appliqué to work on your art quilt top.   If you want to explore the machine piecing, bring your machine or rent one at the conference.   Because time is short with Lura (two days) we will focus on processes rather than project completion.

You will also be learning to ink, draw and paint as desired to enhance your digitally printed and other fabrics.   Class inks, markers, paints, oil pastels and Prismacolor pencils will be provided for sharing in the workshop.   You may bring your own if you have them and wish to use them.   If you wish to purchase any of the Tsukineko inks, Fantastix applicators and Fabrico textile markers that are used in the class, you may purchase them at www.jukeboxquilts.com .   Purchase of them is OPTIONAL.
  • Rotary Cutter and Mat
  • Paper and fabric scissors
  • Pencil and paper
  • Table top light
  • Multi-plug extension cord with surge protector
  • Sheet to cover your work at night
  • FABRICS: at least 3 non-precious fabrics for the free-form piecing exercises, approximately a fat quarter each.   Other fabrics in colors and textiles that will suit the digital images you plan to work with and have printed in the first part of the class.   Variety is the goal - scraps are fine.   If you decide to make a finished top it will be wall sized, so richness of choice is small amounts is best.
  • OPTIONAL: Any textiles inks, markers, paints you may wish to bring
  • OPTIONAL: Photo print of a face that is at least 4" high for shading exercise
  • OPTIONAL: Fusible for appliqué and construction process
  • OPTIONAL: Sewing machine and basic sewing machine kit

Lab fee: $60 - Includes class manual, a minimum of three 17-inch x 12-inch sheets of digital fabric printed on our printer.   Your manual will allow you to repeat at home what you have learned in the class.   Time permitting; you may purchase additional printed fabric sheets at special class pricing.   This fee includes the use of our textile inks, markers, paints and Prismacolor pencils, muslin, and other supplies that you may use in the class.
